Cover illustration. Echinocactus honzonthalonius var nicholii is one of the handsomest cacti of the southwest, its stem- and spine-colors mimicking those of the surrounding soil and rocks. Our artist is Gerhard Marx, lately of South Africa and now living in Arizona, where he continues to find plants worthy of his artistic talents. This specimen was growing in the foothills of the Waterman Mountains northwest of Tucson.
