Cover illustration. The Destruction of Madagascar's flora, outlined in Mark Salak's article in this issue, is well illustrated by this poignant photo of a native boabab Adonsonia za. This old specimen in its dormant leafless state, appears drowning in an ocean of the Mexican fiber plant , Agave sisalana, which, except for the uncleared strip at the right, has taken the place of the original thorn forest.

Myron Kimnach took this photo near Berenty in September 1993.
