A second set of the first edition volume 1-3 in library cloth hardbound with the usual library markings and card pocket on rear end page. Set is in good+ condition with shelf wear on bottom covers, some corners are worn through, age toning to the pages, musty smell, staining to covers and in one volume 3 of the color prints were attached to opposite page in small ¾" areas which when removed detached a small amount of the 3 prints. The 4-volume set is in very good condition with slight damp stains and wrinkling to the first third of volume one, on the outer inch of the pages and affecting the first color plate. Damp staining also to the back third, lower corner of volume 3 and bottom edge of volume 4. Luther Burbank (1849-1926) was born in Lancaster, Massachusetts, on March 7, 1849. In California his birthday is celebrated as Arbor Day, and trees are planted in his memory. The famed horticulturist made his home in Santa Rosa where he conducted the plant-breeding experiments that brought him world renown: introducing more than 800 new varieties of fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, and ornamental plants. In his day Luther Burbank was a hero. Countless people sought his acquaintance, including: Thomas Alva Edison, Henry Ford, Hugo de Vries, George Skull, Jack London, Paramahansa Yogananda, astronomer Edgar Lucian Larkin, and thousands more crossed continents and oceans to seek the "specialness" of this extraordinary gardener touched with genius.
