Mammillaria glochidiata WAF 2183
We described what we identify as M. glochidiata in our article in the
Mammillaria Society Journal. 42:4. 2002, "Another look at Mammillaria
glochidiata Martius". We argued that Coulter's 1828 description of M.
crinita, Martius' 1832 description of M. glochidiata, Coulter's
description of M. criniformis and Dietrich's 1836 description of
M. wildii were all of the same plant from the Barranca Toliman near the
English Mining Company's operation. We identified this plant as M.
glochidiata. We noted that de Candolle's 1834 redescription of Coulter's
M. crinita as M. criniformis listed two infraspecific taxa
having two forms, with pink and with whitish flowers. We believe that these
two flower colours in a single population with no intermediates is a
significant identifying neurological characteristic of M. glochidiata.
The illustration shows the flower colours on plants we collected as WAF2183
in 1991. |
